From Burnout to Breakthrough: My Journey to Worth-Centered Leadership

I used to measure my worth by my work output. Every promotion, every achievement, every late night at the office felt like proof that I mattered. But somewhere along the way, in my relentless pursuit of success, I lost sight of something crucial: myself.

The woman who once lit up every room she entered had dimmed to barely a flicker.

As a single mother raising two little girls with big dreams, I lived by the motto "by any means necessary." I worked 50+ hour weeks, often as the first and only Black woman in leadership spaces. I worked nights, weekends, and "off days"—whatever it took to ensure my daughters had everything they needed, even if it was just their favorite "ketchup and Kool-Aid."

I told myself I was breaking glass ceilings for other women and people of color. I embraced being the "first" and pushed harder, believing that grinding and hustling were the price of success.

Then 2021 hit me like a wall.

Despite remarrying and achieving career milestones, the pandemic amplified every stress. I was diagnosed with depression and debilitating migraines. Sunday scaries became panic attacks. Monday mornings felt like walking into battle. My friends and family noticed I was forgetful, anxious, and had lost my usual bright, optimistic spirit.

The breaking point came when my grandmother entered her final days battling cancer. Even facing this profound loss, I found myself still prioritizing work over my own well-being. That's when I knew something had to change.

I took a three-month sabbatical—the first time in years I had permission to be still.

In that stillness, I confronted uncomfortable truths:

  • I was suffering from burnout that had been building for years

  • My identity was wrapped up in my work performance

  • I had handed over control of my life to employers and managers

  • I was living out someone else's vision of what my life should look like

The question that changed everything: "What if my worth isn't tied to my work?"

I realized I had been leading from everywhere except my true self. I was chasing promotions others promised would fulfill me, following paths' companies laid out for me, measuring my worth by productivity metrics that never felt like enough.

I wanted something different. A life of ease and intention. To be present for my family. To model for my daughters that we are worthy of rest, that grind culture doesn't serve the inherent value we have to offer this world.

That's when God gave me the first visions for Worthy of Dignity.

I shared my story on a podcast in 2022, and my inbox filled with women experiencing similar struggles. They all wanted to know "how?” How I discovered the need for change, what changes I made, and how I was finding peace, freedom, and purpose.

Today, through Worthy of Dignity, I support leaders ready to transform. I focus on empowering ambitious, high-achieving women —especially Black women—to ground their identity in their inherent worth rather than external measures of performance.

I've learned that sustainable leadership doesn't come from doing more, it comes from being grounded in who you are. When we honor our own dignity and worth, we naturally begin seeing and honoring the dignity and worth in others.

My journey from burnout to breakthrough taught me that rest and abundance are our birthright. We are worthy of dignity, and we can lead from that truth.

If you're exhausted from constantly proving your worth, if you're tired of Sunday scaries and Monday morning dread, I want you to know: there is another way.

You don't have to choose between success and well-being. You are worthy of dignity, and you can lead from that truth.

Your breakthrough is one conversation away.
